The Canisius College rowing team opened its mid-season racing trip in Florida at the University of South Florida Invitational. The Golden Griffins scrimmaged the University of Florida, University of Tampa, and host USF in a series of 1500-meter sprint races on Saturday afternoon along the Tampa Bypass Canal.

"It was a great day of racing in Tampa with thanks to coach Jon Compana of our hosts at USF, and the crews from Tampa and Florida who came to join in the racing," said head coach Joel Furtek. "Overall, today was the challenge we needed going into our full week of training here in Tampa."

The first race of the day included club crews from Florida and South Florida, and the Golden Griffins' Novice team.

"Our novices completed their first sprint race and learned a great deal from the speed of UF - coached so well by UCF All-American Krystina Sarff," said Furtek. "[Canisius novice coach] Stephanie Parrish did a great job of improving their speed between heats and I know she'll continues that development. I look forward to their increase in speed this week."

Following the Novice race, the Griffs' Varsity Eight split into a pair of fours to face Tampa in the sprint races.

"Our two varsity fours faced good crews from U Tampa under veteran coach Bill Dunlap, who was coaching here when I was a student-athlete in 1987," said Furtek. "I'm pleased that we won the piece."

The Blue and Gold will next compete in the Sunshine State at the Florida Intercollegiate Rowing Association (FIRA) Championship in Sarasota, Fla. on Saturday, April 6.
