The Canisius baseball team scored 29 runs and swept a doubleheader at Norfolk State on Sunday afternoon. The Golden Griffins won 17-5 and 12-1 to improve to 8-3, extending their winning streak to six games. Canisius has a winning streak of at least five games for the 16th time since 2008 and for the seventh consecutive season.
Game 1 Canisius 17, Norfolk State 5
Canisius jumped on the board quickly, with two runs in the top of the first. Sophomore Anthony Massicci led off with a double, senior Ryan Coppinger followed with an RBI triple and junior Jesse Puscheck scored Coppinger with a sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. The Spartans came right back and tied the game with two runs in the bottom half of the inning.
The Griffs broke the game open in the fifth, scoring eight runs. Canisius loaded the bases with nobody out as sophomore Brett Siddall led off with a single, followed by back-to-back bunt singles from freshman Jake Lumley and senior Jesse Kelso. Massicci scored two runs with an RBI single and an intentional walk to Puscheck loaded the bases. Luppens cleared the bases with a double to put the Griffs up by five runs. After a walk to junior Connor Panas, Siddall singled through the right side to score Luppens with Panas scoring on a mis-played through. An RBI single from Lumley closed out the scoring and put the Griffs up 10-2.
Puscheck picked up another RBI in the sixth on a groundout that scored senior Ronnie Bernick while Luppens had his fourth RBI of the day on a double that scored Coppinger.
Sophomore Alex Godzak (2-1) won his second consecutive start, allowing three runs (one earned) in six innings while striking out two. Freshman Zachary Trumpler allowed one run in two innings of relief while junior Tyler Vavra allowed a run in one inning of work.
Luppens went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and five RBI. Siddall was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBI. Massicci was 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBI.
Canisius 12, Norfolk State 1
Canisius carried over its offensive to the second game of the day, scoring five runs in the first inning and featuring a RBI double from Siddall and two-RBI single from senior Jose Torralba. Canisius added three more runs in the third, which featured another two-RBI single from Torralba. In the fourth, Luppens had an RBI single and Puscheck scored on a wild pitch. The Griffs pushed across two more runs in the sixth on a two-RBI single from senior Shane Zimmer to put Canisius ahead 12-1.
Junior Rohn Pierce (3-0) went six innings, allowing one run on six hits, walking zero and striking out a career-high eight. Senior Tyler Soucie threw a scoreless seventh inning and struck out two batters.
Torralba went 2-for-4 with four RBI while Luppens was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI. Puscheck was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and Massicci went 2-for-4 with three runs scored.
Canisius and Norfolk State will complete the four-game series on Monday, with first pitch for the doubleheader set for 11 a.m.
