Day One Recap
The team of senior Brennan Root, sophomore Paul Henry, sophomore Josh Sopchak and senior Cooper Roach placed second in the men’s distance medley relay with a time of 10:00.12, as the Canisius Indoor Track program completed day one of the 2017 MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday evening from the New Balance Armory Track and Field Center in New York, N.Y.

The women’s distance medley relay team of junior Carlin Sullivan, junior Haylie Virginia, senior Haley Keene and sophomore Siobhan Quinn broke their own school record, placing third in 12:10.99.

The other finals event of the evening, the 5k, saw senior Jeff Antolos place eighth in the men’s race with a time of 15:00.79, while senior Anna Phillips ended in tenth on the women’s side at 18:08.14

In the trial events from day one both Roach and senior Xavier Sauvageau advanced to the men’s mile final to be held at 5 p.m. Sunday. Roach finished the trial in fifth place at 4:20.8, while teammate Sauvageau ended in sixth with a time of 4:21.3.

In the men’s 800 meter trial, Henry qualified for Sunday’s final by placing seventh with a time of 1:55.97.

Day two begins Sunday at 4:50 p.m. with the women’s mile final and will feature 15 other track finals events, including the men’s and women’s 3k at 6:35 p.m.

Head Coach Nate Huckle's Comments
"The first day of competition went very well for us overall. Cooper and Xavier ran tactical, intelligent races to advance to the finals of the mile. Paul Henry had a breakthrough performance in the 800 meter trials to advance to the second day of competition. He was hindered by injuries his freshman year, but he has rebounded nicely and is gaining confidence with each race."

"Both distance medley teams raced very well at the end of the evening. The women dropped another nine seconds from their school record, and the men ran their fastest time ever a the MAAC Championships."
