The Canisius indoor track program will wrap up its season this weekend, as the Golden Griffins will travel to Boston to take part in the ECAC/IC4A Championships March 3-4. This year's event will be hosted at Boston University.
The Griffs' first event in the championships will feature senior Jeff Antolos running in the 5K final at 12:25 p.m., on Saturday, followed by the men’s distance medley relay trial and the men’s 4x800 trial.
On Sunday, the women’s distance medley relay team will race at 11 a.m., while the men’s distance medley relay team will race at 2:20 p.m., if they advance.
“The ECAC/IC4A is a great opportunity," Canisius head coach Nate Huckle said. "This is the reward the athletes work towards they go through the regular season. The qualifications are very rigorous, so it gives them that extra goal beyond competing in the MAAC Championships.
“The facility at Boston University is outstanding; each time we’ve gone there we have set school records. As a team, we are looking forward to having the chance to conclude the indoor season with one more great performance."
Huckle sees the men’s distance medley relay team of senior Xavier Sauvageau, sophomore Paul Henry, sophomore Josh Sopchak and senior Cooper Roach having a legitimate chance of breaking the school record in the event.
“Xavier is running well and should be a great lead-leg for us in the 1,200 and Cooper, who is running very well, will be the anchor leg in the mile," Huckle said. "Paul [Henry] and Josh [Sopchak] should work well in the 400 and 800 legs in the middle. I think we can go significantly faster than our school record (9:54.70).
“For the women, this is the first time we have taking them to the indoor ECAC Championships, so this will be a good opportunity to get their feet wet and see what this event all about."
The women’s distance medley relay team of of junior Carlin Sullivan, junior Haylie Virginia, senior Haley Keene and sophomore Siobhan Quinn are coming off of a strong performance at the MAAC Championships, where they broke their own school record, placing third with a time of 12:10.99.
