The men’s distance medley relay broke a school record in their trial event, finishing in 9:54.18, as the Canisius indoor track program competed in the ECAC/IC4A Championship Saturday afternoon from Boston University.
With the performance, the team of senior Xavier Sauvageau, sophomore Paul Henry, sophomore Josh Sopchak and senior Cooper Roach advance to the IC4A final event Sunday afternoon, placing third in the trial events second heat.
Also breaking a school indoor record for the Blue and Gold was senior Jeff Antolos, who finished eighth in the 5k final in 14:23.58. In the program best performance, Antolos also broke his personal best time by 14 seconds.
The third and final event of the day for the Griffs was the men’s 4x800 team of freshman Donny Glavin, senior A.J. Stuver, senior Brennan Root and senior Galen Snyder who ended fourth in the third heat of the trial event at 7:48.04.
Head Coach Nate Huckle’s Comments
“We had an outstanding first day of competition today. In three races we came away with two school records and a near-miss on a third. Jeff started the meet off with a well-paced effort in the 5k. He was patient early, then moved with the pack as the pace started to heat up. His intelligent racing paid off with a 14 second personal best and a new Canisius indoor record.”
“In the distance medley relay trials, the men put together their best race of the season in posting the third fastest time of day, which moves them on to the finals tomorrow. Xavier got us out well in the 1200 meter opening leg, then Paul and Josh kept us close so Cooper could close it down in the anchor leg. He brought it home in a 4:04, moving well through the field.”
“In the 4x800 meter relay, all four men hit personal-best times in their attempt at the school record. They took advantage of the lightning-fast track and strong competition, running the second-fastest indoor time ever for the Griffs and falling just a second shy of the top mark.”
The Griffs will take part in day two of the ECAC/IC4A Championship Sunday, with the women’s distance medley relay team racing at 11 a.m., while the men’s distance medley relay team will race at 2:20 p.m. in the finals event.
