Swimming Competes at Iona

Canisius swimming and diving swam their first conference meet Saturday afternoon against Iona College. Freshman Megan Braun highlighted the women's diving competition, taking first place in the three meter, while sophomore Erica Vitale placed first in the 200 IM as the Griffs fell to Iona 93-139. For the men, sophomore Stephen Pochatko took top honors in the 200 backstroke as they finished just behind Iona 105-129.

Pochatko finished the 200-yard backstroke in 1:58.23, taking first to earn nine points for the team. Junior Kevin Ernst finished first in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of  Pochatko and Ernst combined with freshmen Mike Disco and Tyler Carver to place with top honors in the 400 medley relay in a time of 3:39.35. Diver Alex Pason also had a significant contribution to the team, finishing first in both the one-meter and three-meter diving events. Freshman Matt Moessinger set a season-best time in the 500 free while Rob Novak, John Morphis and Tyler Carver all set lifetime-best times in the 1000 free, 200 IM and 200 breaststroke events.

On the women's side, Vitale finished the 200 IM in 2:15.72, wrapping up nine team points for the Griffs and pulled in a season-best time in the 1000-yard freestyle. Sophomore Julia Terrien won the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:33.04, racing for another nine points for the team, while freshman Annelise Gunn-Taylor and Michelle Niblock combined with sophomores Sarah Schaefer and Kara Powalski to win the 400 freestyle-relay for the women in 3:47.60. Gunn-Taylor also achieved a lifetime best in the 200 freestyle while diver Amina Benman met her ECAC 1 meter cut.

"The Griffs had a great meet, swimming numerous season and lifetime bests," said head coach Scott Vanderzell. "The competition we came against is a great preparation tool as we move further into the season."

The Griffs compete next on Friday, December 18 against St. Bonaventure. Meet time is set for 3:00 p.m.
