"Monk" Schafer '35 - Schafer, a four-year letter winner and former sergeant in the
US Army, was a 60-minute player for the Golden Griffins, was 6'3 and 225
pounds. Canisius head coach Eugene Oberst called Schafer one of the greatest
football players he had ever seen.
He was also said to have had the "strength of two ordinary linemen,
faster than the fastest halfback in Western New York, with an uncanny instinct"
by Cy Kritzer. Schafer also earned
one letter in track, placing sixth in the New York Athletic Club Games in the
shot-put. He also competed in the Penn Relays and the National AAU Championship
at Soldier Field in Chicago.
