Howard "Monk" Schafer '35 - Schafer, a four-year letter winner and former sergeant in the US Army, was a 60-minute player for the Golden Griffins, was 6'3 and 225 pounds. Canisius head coach Eugene Oberst called Schafer one of the greatest football players he had ever seen.  He was also said to have had the "strength of two ordinary linemen, faster than the fastest halfback in Western New York, with an uncanny instinct" by Cy Kritzer.  Schafer also earned one letter in track, placing sixth in the New York Athletic Club Games in the shot-put. He also competed in the Penn Relays and the National AAU Championship at Soldier Field in Chicago.
