Canisius College senior golfer Mike Spiotta recorded his fifth career top-five finish and his second this season, as he placed third overall at the rain-shortened Cornell Invitational Sunday afternoon at the Robert Trent Jones Course in Thaca, N.Y. Spiotta shot a one-over par score of 73 to finish the 36-hole event with a combined score of 146.
As a team, the Golden Griffins took eighth place in the 13-team field with a two-round tally of 618, three strokes behind the University of Ottawa. Canisius shot 317 on Sunday. Binghamton won the Cornell Invitational for the third-straight year after the Bearcats shot 296 on Sunday, highlighted by Josh Holling's 71. Holling won the individual medalist honors as well.
Canisius freshman Andrew Romano shot 79 on Sunday to tie for 16th while senior Michael Carrig also shot 79 in the final round to tie for 18th place.
The golf team will close out the 2012 fall schedule Oct. 8-9 at The Connecticut Cup, hosted by UConn in Ellington, Conn.
