A goal in the 88th minute gave the visiting Iona Gaels a 3-2 victory against the Canisius College men's soccer team on Friday night. The loss drops the Griffs to 8-6-2 on the season and 1-5-0 in MAAC play, while the Gaels improve to 7-9-0 and 5-1-0 against league foes.
"Right now, we are being plagued by mental mistakes," said Canisius head coach Dermot McGrane. "Iona is a very good team and we played a majority of the game pretty well. However, when you make a mistake against a quality opponent, they punish you for it and that's what happened tonight."
Freshman Alex DeCarolis and sophomore Asani Samuels both tallied goals for the Griffs in the loss.
The Gaels struck first in the contest, scoring in the eighth minute of play. Franklin Castellanos stole the ball from a Canisius defender and finished from 12 yards out for the early 1-0 advantage.
DeCarolis knotted the game at one in the 32nd minute with his third tally of the season. After an Iona foul right outside the box, the Griffs took advantage of a quick restart with Iona not set on defense. Senior Gavin Falconer found De Carolis open on the outside and the rookie buried his attempt for the 1-1 score.
Iona reclaimed its advantage shortly before the intermission when Ansger Otto scored in the 37th minute. Otto gained possession of the ball and made several moves to beat Canisius players before scoring from 15 yards out for the 2-1 halftime lead.
Canisius eventually evened the game once again with Samuels' fifth tally of the season. Falconer once again delivered a strong ball on a free kick and after a diving stop by the Iona keeper, Samuels knocked in the rebound to tie the contest in the 72nd minute.
The Gaels, however, took advantage of one final opportunity to earn the victory. Castellanos sent a ball through the Canisius defense and to Alvaro Torrecilla, who finished his chance with just 2:41 remaining in regulation for the 3-2 win.
Canisius finished the contest by outshooting the Gaels on the night, 21-12, in addition to a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks.
The Griffs wrap up play at home on Sunday afternoon, hosting Fairfield at the Demske Sports Complex. Game time on Senior Day is set for 1 p.m.
Game Notes: De Carolis' three goals on the season are the most by a Canisius freshman since Alan McGreal netted six during the 2006 campaign ... Iona has won the last five games overall against Canisius and the last eight meetings in regular-season play (Canisius earned a win over the Gaels during the 2007 MAAC Tournament) ... With his two assists on the night, Falconer now has 24 points this season, tied for the ninth-most in the program's history.
