NOTING THE GRIFFS

  • The Canisius College volleyball team concludes regular-season play with two road matches this weekend, playing at Iona College on Saturday, and then facing Fairfield University on Sunday afternoon.
  • Entering the weekend, Canisius has a 13-3 conference record and is tied with Fairfield for first place in the conference standings.
  • Last weekend, Canisius clinched a spot in the 2012 MAAC Championship, to be held at Alumni Hall at Fairfield University on Nov. 17-18. Canisius joins Fairfield, Siena and Niagara in the four-team field.
  • None of the seeds have been determined for the single-elimination tournament. Canisius can earn the No. 1 seed and outright regular-season title with two wins this weekend.
  • Canisius has finished in the top four of the conference in each of the last three seasons and five times in the last seven seasons (2006, 2008, 2010, 2011).
  • Canisius is one of three schools, along with Fairfield and Siena, to have 10 or more MAAC wins in at least six of the last seven seasons.
  • Since the MAAC went to a double round-robin format in conference play for the 2006 season, Canisius has at least 13 league wins for the second time in program history. The program record is 14 wins set during the 2006 season.
  • In the meetings between the teams in the Koessler Athletic Center in the middle of October, Canisius defeated Iona in four sets (25-21, 19-25, 25-18, 25-10) and ralled from two sets down to defeat Fairfield in five sets (23-25, 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 17-15).
  • Canisius snapped a six-match losing streak to the Gaels with the win over Iona earlier this season. The Griffs have lost their last five meetings to Iona in New Rochelle.
  • Canisius and Fairfield have split the last two meetings in Alumni Hall. The Stags swept the season series with two five-set wins last season while Canisius swept the season series in 2010. The teams have not split the season series since 2008.
  • Dating back to last season, Canisius has won 19 of its last 22 regular-season matches against MAAC opponents.
  • Canisius ranks 72nd nationally in blocks per set (2.35) and leads the MAAC with a 2.53 blocks per set average in conference play. Canisius also leads the league in conference play at 1.65 service aces per set.
  • Canisius posted a .554 attack percentage in the Nov. 4 sweep of Saint Peter’s. That set the program record for attack percentage and is also the best attack percentage by a MAAC school in a match this season.
  • Senior Samantha Good earned MAAC Player of the Week honors on Monday, and then was one of 12 players selected by the Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) as a Top Performer in the country.
  • Good had the most productive weekend of her career, averaging 4.71 kills per set and 1.57 blocks per set to go along with a .609 attack percentage and six service aces.
  • In the Oct. 21 match against Marist, senior Allyson Severyn became the program’s all-time leader in career digs, passing the record of 2,095 set by Jess Stackhouse (2004-07).
  • Severyn has been named the MAAC Libero of the Week four times this season. She ranks 12th nationally in digs per set (5.64) and is the fourth player in MAAC history to record 2,000 digs in a career.
  • The Golden Griffins rank third in the MAAC with 78 regular-season conference wins since the start of the 2006 season. The Griffs have a .629 winning percentage in conference play during that span.
