Canisius baseball team split Sunday's doubleheader at UNC Asheville, winning
the opener 6-4 in 11 innings and then falling 14-2 in the second game of the
day. The teams split the four-game series, and Canisius is now 4-4 on the
Game One - Canisius 6, UNC
Griffs scored first with a solo homer from junior Jesse Kelso in the top of the third. UNC Asheville took a 3-1 lead
in the bottom of the inning with a two-RBI double from Kyle Towles and a
sacrifice fly from Billy Creighton. The Bulldogs held that lead until the
seventh when the Griffs were able to force extra innings. Sophomore Jesse Puscheck led off with a pinch-hit
single but was forced at second on a fielder's choice. Kelso and junior Shane Zimmer were each hit by a pitch
to load the bases. After senior Chris
Gruarin struck out swinging, senior Brooklyn
Foster came through with the two-out, two-RBI single to tie the game.
Griffs took a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth as freshman Anthony Massicci led off with a double and moved to third on a
sacrifice bunt. After a walk to Foster, freshman Brett Siddall scored Massicci with an RBI single through the left
side. UNC Asheville took advantage of a Massicci error to start the bottom of
the ninth, using the extra out to score the game-tying, unearned run off junior Jon Fitzsimmons on a single to short
from Eli Miller.

scored Foster with a single through the left side. Torralba moved to third on
back-to-back wild pitches and scored on an infield single from sophomore Mike Krische.

scoreless bottom of the 11th, getting a double play to end the game
and pick up his first collegiate win. Sophomore Devon Stewart allowed three runs, walked one and struck out five in
a five-inning start. Sophomore
Aaron Casper threw two scoreless
innings in relief of Stewart.
Game Two - UNC Asheville 14,
Griffs again took the early lead, scoring a run in the top of the first. Senior
Christian Segar led off with a
single, moved to second on a groundout and scored on a one-out, RBI single from
Kelso. UNC Asheville (3-4) came back with two runs in the bottom of the first
and two more runs in the bottom of the third. Despite loading the bases with
one out in the third, the Griffs weren't able to score any runs.
Bulldogs broke the game open with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and
then seven runs in the fifth. UNC Asheville took advantage of five Canisius
errors in the game, chasing starter Alex
Godzak after 3.2 innings. The freshman allowed seven runs, four earned,
while striking out six. Senior Scott Whitehead
allowed one run in two-third of an inning, junior Mike Tolsma allowed six runs and junior Tyler Soucie threw a scoreless 1.2 innings.
returns to the field next weekend at Murray State, with the series scheduled to
start on Friday, with a first pitch of 2 p.m.
Notes: Kelso had a team-high eight hits on the weekend. Kelso set a career high with the four hits in the first game with the homer being the first of his career... Foster reached base in seven of his nine plate appearances in his two starts... The Griffs drew 15 walks and had six HBP in the four games while Canisius pitching allowed eight walks and hit just one batter in 32 innings... Canisius leadoff batters reached base 50 percent of the time and is at 49.3 percent in eight games... The Griffs hit .170 with runners in scoring position on the weekend while UNC Asheville hit .368. Canisius is hitting .198 with runners in scoring position through eight games.
