The Canisius College women's lacrosse dominated Robert Morris on Wednesday afternoon, scoring 10 of the game's first 11 goals en route to a 16-5 victory in Moon Township, Pa. The Griffs improve to 2-2 on the season, while handing the Colonials their first loss as the team drops to 3-1.
Senior Morgan Leonard and junior Maria Kotas led the Griffs with six points on three goals and three assists in the winning effort. Leonard set her career high with six points, while also leading the Griffs with four caused turnovers. Kotas posted a personal-best six points for the second-straight contest in addition to a team-leading four draw controls on the afternoon. Sophomore Tori Quinn also matched her career high with five points in the win - all coming in the first half - with three goals and two assists.
Seniors Meghan McGunigle and Lindsey Morgan, sophomores Meghan Cuddy and Whitley Perry and freshmen Ashley Bull, Brenna Murray and Caroline Ogden rounded out the scoring for Canisius with a goal each. The tallies for Bull and Murray marked the first of their careers.
Sophomore Kayla Scully and senior Gina Molfetta both saw time in goal for the Griffs. Scully recorded five saves in the start to earn the victory, while Molfetta posted two saves during the second half.
Kotas gave the Griffs a lead they would not relinquish with an unassisted tally 2:37 into the game. Perry and McGunigle both followed with scores for a 3-0 lead less than five minutes into the contest before Robert Morris answered back with a goal. However, Quinn led a game-defining 7-0 run in just over seven minutes of action to turn a two-goal matchup into a 10-1 Canisius lead. The sophomore attacker recorded four of her five points during the seven-goal stretch, netting three goals to go along with an assist.
Each team added one final goal in the first stanza as the Griffs headed into the halftime break with an 11-2 advantage.
Canisius picked up in the second right where it left off in the first, netting five of the first six tallies to stretch its lead to 16-3. Robert Morris added two goals in the final three minutes of play but it was too little, too late as the Griffs cruised to the 16-5 victory.
The Griffs held a 29-16 advantage in shots and a 12-11 edge in draw controls.
Brittany Byerly led Robert Morris with three points, two goals and one assist, while Kaitlin Pentz recorded seven saves in goal.
Canisius returns to action on Sunday to take on nationally-ranked Ohio State. The Griffs and 15th-ranked Buckeyes are set to meet in Columbus at noon.
Game Notes: Canisius has won all nine meetings with Robert Morris ...
