Going into the last weekend of the regular season, we were really looking to end on a high note as the last few weekends we had not fared as well as we had planned. RIT is a team that in past years we had always struggled against and they definitely had our full attention.
We definitely did not disappoint and put forth two great efforts to earn the sweep. Not only were these games important to build momentum going into the first round of playoffs, but we knew with a sweep we would earn home ice for the playoffs. This is something I have never experienced in my four years here as every playoff series I have played has been on the road. Being a senior, I am very excited to have the chance to play in a home playoff game and not having to travel, I believe, will really work to our benefit.
Last Saturday, being our final regular season home game, was Senior Night and this always adds a little extra excitement to the game, especially for myself. Being a senior, it is always nice getting a win on such an important night. Due to the senior theme, I would just like to mention the three other seniors that will graduate this year - Chris Barrea, Torrey Lindsay, and Preston Shupe - and thank them for their hard work and dedication over the past four seasons.
Playing Division I hockey while attending college is a big commitment and all of these guys have been a great asset to the program. Hopefully, we can make a great playoff run this year and end this season on a high note.
For the first round we will play the 10th-seeded Bentley Falcons. During the regular season, we struggled against this team as we lost both beams at Bentley and this makes this weekend even more important as we look for some retribution. Each series is a best out of three, which means it is imperative to have a great start to the series since they are so short. I know I speak for the whole team when I say we are very excited to have home ice and I'm sure our best efforts will be put forth this weekend.
On another note, we also had our senior banquet this year, and the venue was changed for this occasion as it was held in our newly built science center on campus. It was a very nice set up and it was great for all of the seniors and their families to get together and celebrate the last four years.
Everyone was in high spirits after a big weekend and the banquet ended up being a good time for everyone involved. The Griffs thank you for your support and hope to see you at Buff State at our first round of playoffs.
Until next time, keep it simple,
Ben Parker and Braeden Rigney
