The Canisius College baseball team returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon to host the University at Buffalo in a seven-inning doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex, presented by HarMar Industries.

BATTING PRACTICE

  • The Canisius College baseball team returns to the field on Wednesday afternoon, meeting the University at Buffalo for the second time this season.
  • Canisius and Buffalo are playing a doubleheader for the first time since May 17, 2011.
  • Canisius defeated Buffalo 6-5 on March 26, at the Demske Sports Complex. The teams are also scheduled to play on May 1.
  • The Golden Griffins are playing their sixth and seventh home games of the season and have won their last three games at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius will play 10 of its final 15 games at the Demske Sports Complex.
  • Canisius won its third straight home game with a 9-3 win over Gannon University on Sunday afternoon. The Griffs won for the 10th time this season when trailing at some point in the contest. 
  • Canisius leads the MAAC in nine offensive categories, including by 26 points in batting average and by 1.8 in runs per contest.
  • The Canisius pitching staff leads the MAAC in strikeouts per nine innings (7.1) and in fewest walks per nine innings (2.70). Canisius is the only pitching staff averaging fewer than three walks per nine innings and also the only staff with a strikeouts per nine innings average over 6.5.
  • The Griffs also are tied for the lead in the MAAC in fielding percentage (.966).
  • Canisius is 17-7 in road games this season after the April 10 win in Akron. The Griffs enter the week ranked first in the country at the Division I level with the 17 road wins.
  • Canisius has had three winning streaks of five games or longer this season. The Griffs have had 14 winning streaks of five or more games since 2008, the highest total in the conference.
  • Since starting the season 4-4, Canisius is 18-6 in its last 24 games.
  • Three Canisius pitchers combined to throw the program’s first nine-inning no-hitter at the Division I level in an 8-0 win at Iona on March 29.
  • Canisius has 13 Canadians on its roster, the most at the NCAA Division I level.

SETTING THE STANDARD

  • Canisius has won 197 games since the start of the 2008 season, the fourth-highest total in the Northeast.
  • Canisius has qualified for the MAAC Championship in each of the last six seasons, winning the MAAC regular-season title in 2008 and 2010. 
  • Canisius has had eight players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft since 2008.
  • The Golden Griffins have had three All-Americans in the last five seasons.
  • Canisius has had three freshman All-Americans since 2007, including sophomore Devon Stewart following the 2012 campaign.
  • Coach Mike McRae won his 300th game on March 16. McRae has 309 wins in his career, trailing only Don Colpoys (325 wins) in the Canisius record books.

BUFFALO SERIES HISTORY

  • Buffalo leads the all-time series 46-29 against the Golden Griffins. Wednesday will be the second and third of four meetings between the teams in 2013.
  • Canisius and Buffalo have already met once this year, a 6-5 win for the Golden Griffins. Buffalo jumped out to a 5-1 lead before Canisius scored the final five runs to complete the come-from-behind win.
  • Canisius has won 10 of the last 13 meetings between the teams.

BUFFALO SCOUT

  • Buffalo enters Wednesday’s doubleheader with an 18-14 overall record and 8-4 record in the Mid-American Conference. The Bulls, who have won 11 of their last 17 games, are in second place in the Eastern Division of the MAC, one game behind Kent State.
  • Buffalo is hitting .266 on the season and averaging 5.2 runs per game. The Bulls have a team ERA of 3.89 and a team fielding percentage of .963.
  • Jason Kanzler leads the team with a .352 batting average, seven home runs and 35 RBI to go along with a team-best 11 stolen bases. He ranks 37th in the country in slugging percentage (.634).
  • Buffalo ranks 32nd in the country in sacrifice flies (19) and 60th in home runs per game. The Bulls have hit 18 homers on the season.
  • Buffalo has given up 56 stolen bases and has struck out 236 times in 1062 at-bats.
