Canisius softball player Robin Kennery was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Monday after the Golden Griffins went 4-2 at home in six MAAC contests April 18-21. This marks the first time this season Canisius’ second baseman has been honored by the league.
Kennery hit .455 (10-for-22) with two doubles, a home run, four runs scored and seven RBIs in conference doubleheaders against Niagara, Manhattan and Saint Peter’s at the Demske Sports Complex. She extended her hitting streak to a career-best 11 games with hits in all six games last week, highlighted by her 3-for-4 performance in the Griffs’ 6-1 win over Manhattan April 20. In Canisius’ win over Niagara April 18, she stole a career-high three bases, and she ended the week with a .455 on-base percentage and a .682 slugging percentage. Defensively, she recorded 13 putouts and eight defensive assists as the Blue and Gold moved to 6-4 in MAAC play in 2013.
Kennery leads Canisius with her .374 batting average and her 34 RBIs through the team’s first 37 games. She is tied for the team lead with three homers this season and her seven doubles also ranks third on the roster. The Williamsville, N.Y., native has a .520 slugging percentage and she leads all of the team’s regular infielders with her .986 fielding percentage.
As a team, Canisius is 21-16 on the year and the Blue and Gold has won three straight after sweeping Saint Peter’s at home April 21, on Senior Day. The Griffs are set to return to action Tuesday, April 23, when the team plays a non-league game at Buffalo. Game time at Nan Harvey Field is set for 4 p.m.
