Canisius head men’s basketball coach Jim Baron announced today that former Golden Griffin Chuck Harris has been named the program’s director of men’s basketball operations. Harris played 115 career games in a Canisius uniform from 2003-07, where he scored 1,090 points to go with 555 rebounds and 312 assists.

Harris comes to Canisius after spending the spring and summer of 2013 as the head AAU coach for G-Boyz, an eighth and ninth grade program from Livonia, Mich. He spent the 2012-13 basketball season at Inkster High School in Inkster, Mich., where he was an assistant coach for the school’s boy’s varsity basketball program and he also spent time as an assistant coach at Schoolcraft College in Livonia, Mich., in 2010. Prior to joining the staff at Schoolcraft, Harris was the head junior varsity and varsity assistant coach with the girl’s basketball team at Osborn High School in Detroit during the 2008-09 campaign. After graduating from Canisius in May 2007 with his degree in digital media arts, Harris played the 2007-08 season for the Crailsheim Proveo-Merlins in the German Bundesliga Basketball League before retiring due to injury.

For the Griffs, the Detroit native earned four varsity letters and was named to the All-MAAC Third-Team after his senior season in 2006-07. He left Canisius as one of three players in program history to score more than 1,000 career points, while pulling down 500-plus rebounds and dishing out more than 200 career assists. He ranks fourth in program history after he drained 166 career 3-point field goals.

“We are very excited to add Chuck to our staff,” Baron said. “I think it is a great thing when you can bring back a former student-athlete to your program. Guys like Chuck know and understand what makes Canisius a great place and they appreciate that we’re working on building this program the right way.”

“This is a perfect situation for me,” Harris said. “It has long been a dream of mine to be a coach at the college level and being able to learn from such an experienced staff is a real blessing. I’m truly excited to be back wearing the Blue and Gold.”

In his new position as director of basketball operations, Harris will be responsible for handling the team’s day-to-day operations, which includes practice set-up, team travel plans, video film exchange, opponent breakdown and scouting reports, while overseeing academic progress for the team’s student-athletes. He will also be director for the Jim Baron Summer Basketball Camps and will assist with the administration of the program’s team camp and elite player camp, held annually in the Koessler Athletic Center.

Harris replaces Mike Iuzzolino, who served as the Griffs’ Director of Basketball Operations during the 2012-13 season. Iuzzolino left the Canisius program in July to take a similar position on the men’s basketball staff at New Mexico under first-year head coach Craig Neal.

The Griffs return three starters and five letterwinners from last year’s team that posted a 20-14 overall record and an 11-7 mark in MAAC play. The 20-win campaign was the program’s first since 2000-01 and the Blue and Gold made their first appearance in the postseason since 1996, as the team advanced to the quarterfinal round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
