The Canisius volleyball team lost its conference home opener in three sets to Marist College on Saturday afternoon. The Golden Griffins lost 25-22, 25-18, 25-23 and drop to 2-1 in MAAC play.
Sophomore Lauren Siebert had eight kills on 13 attack attempts, posting a .615 attack percentage. Senior Emily Elek and freshman Katlyn Tyler each had a team-high nine kills while Tyler also posted four service aces. Junior Emily Litwin had a team-high 14 digs while freshman Jacklyn Malusa added 12 digs.
“We are still working through the discomfort of battling when we reach some adversity,” Canisius coach Cathy Hummel said. “When we aren’t playing at our tempo, it can’t be a singular effort but a collective effort to grind and get back on track.”
Canisius built a 15-10 lead in the first set but Marist would win the next six points to go up 16-15. The teams went back and forth until the Griffs went up 21-20 on a kill from Siebert. The Red Foxes won five of the last six points, closed out by back-to-back kills from Courtney Shaw, to take the first set.
The Griffs went up early again, taking a 9-4 lead on a kill from sophomore Rachel Kline. The Red Foxes battled back and evened the score at 12-12. Marist would pull away late in the set again, going on a 9-1 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
Marist (8-5, 2-1 MAAC) used the same formula in the third set as Canisius went up 19-14 on a kill from sophomore Amy Osinski. The Red Foxes won five straight points but a kill from Elek stopped the run and put Canisius up 20-19. A service ace from Tyler and another kill from Elek put the Griffs up 22-19. Marist would score five straight points, taking advantage of the serve of Lexi Millington, and had two match points at 24-22. A kill from Malusa fought off the first set point, but Marist put the match away on a kill from Kelsey Lahey.
Shaw had 14 kills on 21 attack attempts while Mackenzie Stephens had 11 kills and six blocks as Marist posted 8.5 team blocks on the day. Audra Brady had 37 assists while Brooke Zywick posted 17 digs.
Canisius (4-10, 2-1 MAAC) continues its five-match homestand against Siena on Sunday, with match time in the KAC set for 1 p.m.
