Canisius senior guard Billy Baron has been honored as the MAAC’s Co-Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday afternoon. Baron matched a career-high with 33 points in a road overtime loss at Notre Dame Dec. 29.

This marks the first MAAC Player of the Week honor for Baron this season, who started the 2013-14 campaign as the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year. The East Greenwich, R.I., native had 33 points at Notre Dame on Sunday after he went 10-for-20 from the field, 4-for-8 from 3-point land and 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Baron also had six rebounds, a career-high six steals and five assists in a career-high 43 minutes against the Fighting Irish. The 33-point effort in the loss for Baron marks his fifth career 30-point game in 48 games as a Griff. In those games, the Blue and Gold is 3-2, including Sunday’s loss at Notre Dame in overtime.

For the season, Baron is averaging 21.0 points per game, which ranks fourth in the MAAC and 23rd in the nation. Baron is also averaging 4.7 rebounds and 4.7 assists per game, with his 4.7 helpers per contest ranking him second in the MAAC. He also leads the conference in free-throw shooting percentage at 92.3 percent (72-for-78), which ranks him ninth in the country.

Canisius (8-5, 2-0 MAAC) will return to action Saturday, Jan. 4, when the team plays at Saint Peter’s. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
