Strength and Conditioning

Facility

The Canisius College weight room is located in the second floor of the Koessler Athletic Center across from the sports medicine rehabilitation room.  It is a 6,600 square-foot facility outfitted with Wynmor power racks, Hammer Strength assistive equipment and Paramount Selectorized weight machines.  The free weight area has about 3,500 pounds of dumbbells and over 6,500 pounds of metal and bumper plates.  It is also equipped with 23 aerobic machines that include treadmills, rowers, bikes, stair steppers and elliptical machines, which the athletes use to enhance their level of conditioning.  There is a warm-up area and plyometrics area, where explosive power, reactive capabilities, foot speed, coordination and flexibility are trained.

Philosophy

The primary objective of the strength and conditioning program at Canisius College is for each athlete to stay injury free while assisting them in reaching their maximal level of performance.  This is accomplished through an aggressive approach to sport specific training.  Great care is taken to concentrate on the joint areas that are most susceptible to injury, muscle groups that are involved in the activity and conditioning specific energy systems according to the demands of the athlete’s specific sport.

Developing linear speed, agility, range of movement, absolute strength, functional strength and sport specific power is important in helping the athlete reach their highest potential.  Accomplishing this requires a year-round commitment from the athlete as well as the strength and conditioning staff.  Along with strength training, a high level of conditioning is required for optimal performance.  To accomplish this, we implement high-performance metabolic conditioning as a foundation of total preparation.

Work ethic, accountability, good character and a positive attitude are very important points in our system of evaluation.  We expect our athletes to not only improve physically, but also develop a passion for training that is equivalent to their hunger for competition.  We initiate competitive situations during training as much as possible to facilitate this.

The strength and conditioning staff works to not only enhance each athlete’s strength and conditioning levels, but provide an environment conducive to the development of discipline and leadership skills for reaching optimum physical potential and mental toughness.  Our commitment is to develop the best strength and conditioning program in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

“The will to win is nothing without the will to prepare.”
