Cross Country Takes Fourth and Fifth at MAAC Championships





The Canisius men's cross country team placed fourth, and the women's team finished fifth as both programs took part in the 2017 MAAC Cross Country Championships Saturday afternoon at Holmdel Park in Holmdel, N.J.
 
The fourth-place finish for the Golden Griffin men marks the seventh-straight year where the Blue and Gold has placed in the top-five at the conference's championship event, while the women's fifth-place finish marks the 11th consecutive year where the team has placed in the top-six at the MAAC meet.
 
On the men's side, senior Jeff Antolos earned All-MAAC honors, as he placed fifth in the field with his time of 25:35.96. Sophomore Donny Glavin also earned All-MAAC accolades by placing 10th, as he completed the 8K course in 25:50.44. All seven of Canisius' male runners placed in the top-50 in the field on Saturday, with sophomore Anthony Belfatto placing 16th with his time of 26:30.01 and junior Paul Henry crossing the finish line in 27:12.01 to rank 36th overall. Freshman Paul Suflita (27:32.93 – 45th), junior Patrick Crowley (27:32.93 – 46th) and sophomore Henry Burton (27:39.62 – 48th) rounded out the effort for Canisius, which finished the event with 113 total team points.
 
Iona won its 27th straight MAAC title on the men's side, as the Gaels posted a total of 15 points. Manhattan took second with 97 points, followed by Siena (109), Canisius and Marist (118). Monmouth (124), Rider (194), Quinnipiac (194) and Fairfield (273) took places six through nine, while Niagara (329) and Saint Peter's (355) rounded out the 11-team field.
 
In the women's 6K race, junior Siobhan Quinn placed fifth in the field with her time of 21:52.62 to earn All-MAAC honors for the second-straight year. Fellow junior Aileen Doyle crossed the finish line in 23:18.46 to place 29th, followed by senior Mary Manzari, who took 31st place overall after she posted a time of 23:22.54. Junior Kayla Stewart ran the course in 23:45.23 to place 38th overall and senior Haylie Virginia earned 44th place in the race after she recorded a time of 23:58.96.
 
Seniors Livia Chase (24:03.41 – 48th) and Rachael Weissenburg (24:38.78 – 54th) rounded out the effort for the Griffs, who finished the day with 147 total points. The Iona women's team claimed its 12th MAAC crown in the last 13 years after the Gaels posted 33 points. Marist (71), Quinnipiac (78), Manhattan (112) and Canisius rounded out the top-five, while Monmouth (156) and Siena (172) placed sixth and seventh, respectively. Rider (214), Fairfield (265), Niagara (366) and Saint Peter's (357) finished eighth through 11.
 
With Canisius' pair of top-five finishes on Saturday, the Griffs earned a total of four points in the annual "Battle of the Bridge" series versus Niagara. Canisius now leads the all-sport competition over its rival to the north by a score of 9-1 through the 2017 fall season.
