Pouliot, Niles Shine for Baseball in Victory over Morehead State

Chris Pouliot earned his first victory in a Canisius uniform and Josh Niles drove in a pair of runs as the Golden Griffins salvaged a series split by defeating Morehead State, 6-2, Sunday at Allen Field in Morehead, Ky.

Pouliot allowed three hits in his five-inning start, walking a batter and striking out eight. Peyton Consigli and Tom Peltier also appeared on the mound for Canisius, who combined to allow two runs on five hits as staff, while issuing two walks and fanning 12 Eagle batters.

Kyle Kush had a team-high three hits, going 3-for-4 with a double and driving in a run. Niles, Mike Steffan and Mike DeStefano also logged multi-hit performances for Canisius (4-4).

Alex Jacobs had a pair of hits for Morehead State (3-5).

Kush's first hit of the day came in the second inning when he recorded an RBI double that scored Niles, who reached on a fielding error by Morehead State's right fielder.

Canisius added three more runs in the third to extend its lead to 4-0. Vinny Chiarenza plated the first run of the inning on a groundout. Niles' two RBI came on a two-out infield single, which Dylan Vincent was able to score all the way from second base following a throw to first trying to get Niles out.

While Canisius' offense was clicking on all cylinders – recording seven hits in the first three innings – Pouliot was sharp on the mound, facing the minimum number of batters over the opening four frames. Two Morehead State batters reached base, but Canisius catcher Mike Mazzara threw both runners out attempting to steal second base.

Morehead State cut into Canisius' lead in the fifth, 4-1, following a pair of two-out doubles. The Eagles chipped away at the lead further in the seventh as Jacobs led the inning off with a single before scoring on a wild pitch.

In the next half-inning, Niles opened the top of the eighth with a double before he scored on a wild pitch.

Max Grant solidified the victory for Canisius in the ninth as he roped a leadoff triple down the right field line. Steffan singled Grant home with a base knock to right field, putting Canisius ahead, 6-2.

Peltier closed out the contest retiring the Eagles in order with a pair of groundouts and a flyout.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today we were better in all facets. Our defense played well and our offense put together good at-bats when we needed them.

"CP [Chris Pouliot] did a great job of working the strike zone to give us a great start. If he keeps pitching like that, he will keep us in a lot of baseball games. He got out some early nerves last week and settled in well today.

"Our starting pitching this weekend did a really good job of keeping us in games and giving our offense a chance. That's all you can ask for out of them.

"We are proud of the group to bounce back after a tough Saturday to end the weekend on a high note. We will continue to learn and move forward into a strong part of our schedule."
