Softball Splits Saturday Contests

After falling 9-3 to Boston University Saturday morning, the Canisius softball team earned a 4-3 victory over Tennessee Tech to improve to 3-1 on the season in collegiate softball action on the second day of the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Game 1 Recap
Junior Christie McGee-Ross continued her strong start to the season by putting Canisius up a pair in the second inning. McGee-Ross connected on a 2-1 pitch from Boston University starter Lizzy Avery, hitting the left-center gap for a two-run triple.

The Terriers responded in the home half of the frame with a solo home run from Nicole Amodio and a single from Audrey Sellers to tie the contest at two-all.

BU added to its lead with two runs in the third and a run in both the fourth and fifth innings, putting the team ahead, 6-2.

Sophomore Emily Ilano plated the Griffs third run of a contest, driving in junior Tiara Johnson on a double.

The Terriers added three more insurance markers in the bottom half of the inning to help secure the 9-3 victory.

Junior Megan Giese made the start in the circle, yielding five runs (four earned), on nine hits and one walk while fanning four batters in four innings.

Freshman Rylee Alfaro made her collegiate debut in relief of Giese, tossing a pair of innings.

Game 2 Recap
Jordynn Shirley gave Tennessee Tech the early lead in the third, singling up the middle to score Maykali Harris, who opened the frame with a leadoff single.

Canisius responded in the top half of the fourth, capitalizing on a Golden Eagle throwing error to knot the game at 1-1.
Senior Sophia Recrosio worked a one-out walk in the fifth before McGee-Ross collected an infield single to put runners on the corners.

Another Tennessee Tech error allowed Recrosio to plate the Griffs' second run of the game while McGee-Ross came around to score on Johnson's two-out infield single.

The Golden Eagles did not go away as Brooklyn Stewart clubbed a leadoff double in the bottom of the sixth.

Abby Shoulders singled to right with one out, putting runners on the corners for Tennessee Tech. Shoulders then swiped second base, and advanced to third on a throwing error that also allowed Stewart to score, putting the Golden Eagles down a run.

Shirley drove in her second run of the contest courtesy of a sac fly, tying the game at three.

McGee-Ross opened the final frame with a walk before advancing to second on sophomore Saige Alfaro's groundout.

Graduate Nicole Rivait singled home McGee-Ross for the go-ahead tally.

Sophomore Kate Wiggins made the start in the circle for Canisius, tossing four innings - a career-high. Wiggins gave up just one run on five hits and a pair of walks while striking out a career-high three batters.

Graduate Alexis Churchill came out of the bullpen for the Griffs, earning her first win of the season in three innings of relief.
