Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Falls to Syracuse in Home Opener

Madelyn Lopez drove in a pair of runs, including a solo home run, to pace Syracuse to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in the first game before Jude Padilla hit a go-ahead two-run double in the third inning of the second game to help the Orange to a 7-4 win and a sweep over the Golden Griffins Wednesday afternoon in collegiate softball action from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Game 1 Recap
Canisius saw its lone run of the contest come in the second inning off the bat of sophomore Rosie Gomez.

Gomez stepped to the dish with two outs in the frame and sent the 1-1 pitch from Syracuse starter Lindsey Hendrix over the left field wall to give the Griffs the early 1-0 advantage.

Syracuse would eventually respond later in the game with a two-run fourth to take the lead.

With runners on the corners and one out, Angel Jasso dropped down a bunt in the infield, allowing Yamila Ramos to score and everyone to advance safely.

In the next at-bat, Lopez hit a fly ball to junior Christie McGee-Ross in center, allowing pinch runner Gabby Lantier to score the go-ahead run.

Lopez added an insurance marker in the top of the seventh with a home run to the right-center gap, pushing the Orange lead to 3-1.

Junior Megan Giese took the loss for the Griffs after allowing just three hits and one walk in seven innings of work while striking out seven Syracuse batters in the outing.

Game 2 Recap
The second game started how the first ended, with a long ball.

After sophomore Saige Alfaro beat out the infield single to open the home half of the first for the host Griffs, graduate Nicole Rivait crushed the first pitch she saw from Syracuse hurler Madison Knight, sending it well over the left field wall for the early 2-0 advantage.

Canisius' first lead of the contest was short lived as the Orange plated a pair in the second to tie the game.

With two runners on and a pair of outs in the inning, Rebecca Clyde singled through the left side to score Knight.

Ramos then followed with a single of her own, beating out the infield knock to bring home Tessa Galipeau.

Alfaro helped Canisius regain its lead in the home half of the frame, slapping a ball past the infield with the bases loaded, scoring senior Tiara Johnson and freshman Gabi Farris.

Unfortunately, the Griffs reloaded the bases but were unable to bring any more runs around to score.

Syracuse took the lead in the third and never looked back after posting a three-spot.

Jasso drove in the third run on an RBI groundout to the second baseman before Padilla found the right-center gap to plate a pair and take the Orange's final lead of the ballgame.

Sophomore Toria Kover took the loss in the second game, allowing five runs in three innings of work before handing the ball off to graduate Alexis Churchill.

The southpaw yielded a pair of runs on three hits in four innings of relief out of the Canisius bullpen.
