Rowing Wraps up the Sacred Heart Invitational

The Canisius College rowing team competed in day two of the Sacred Heart Invitational on Sunday, with the Second Varsity Eight posting a third place finish to lead the way for the Griffs.

The Varisty Eight placed fourth and the Varsity Four took seventh in the Griffs' third event of the spring.

"I'm proud of our 2V8's reversing yesterday's loss to RMU and closing the gap on Fairfield,” said head coach Joel Furtek. “They had a good race but still have a lot more speed in them. Our v8 and v4 struggled for a second day but they, too, have a lot more speed. We're all ready to be home in Buffalo and get in some water time after this crazy winter -- the worst in 30 plus years!"

The Second Varsity Eight of freshmen Amber Giambone, Chanel Davis, Mikaela Braun and Erin Grim, sophomores Megan Walsh, Molly Murphy and Ashley Tylenda, junior Liz Reinwald and sophomore coxswain Jordan Bamrick finished just over seven seconds behind first place Mrarist and moved up one spot in the standings from Saturday.

The Varsity Eight kicked the day off for the Griffs and finished fourth, posting a time of 8:23.89. MAAC rivals Fairfield (8:05.10) and Marist (8:09.91) went one-two in the race, with Robert Morris (8:14.11) taking third. Canisius managed to top Iona and host Sacred Heart in the race.

The Varsity Eight was comprised of freshman Liz DelBarba, sophomores Corrine Kickel, Julia Sciandra and Nora Kennon, seniors Meghan Martin, Liz McKinney, Bridget Laszewski and Allison Braun, and sophomore coxswain Hannah Blum.

The Varsity Four rounded out the day for Canisius in a seventh-place finish. Freshmen Nicole Littlejohn, Jenni Vinci and Lauren Bielby, sophomore Jordan Szustak, and freshman coxswain Kaitlyn Taylor made up the boat, which rowed the course in a time of 10:11.90.

The Griffs will now hit the road again, heading to the Knecht Cup in West Windsor, N.J. next weekend.
