Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Earns Pair of Victories on Friday

The Canisius softball team began the season 2-0 for the second straight year as the Golden Griffins defeated Tennessee Tech, 12-4, in five innings and the College of Charleston, 7-3, in collegiate softball action Friday at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, S.C.

Game 1 Recap

The Golden Eagles opened the scoring with a three-run second. Mikayli Harris connected with a double to the gap in right-center to plate a pair before coming around to score on Abby Shoulders' two-out single.

The Griffs answered right back in the home half of the frame, having the first three batters reach base. Senior Sophia Recrosio singled home pinch runner Sydney Costan and junior Destiny Falquez, cutting Tennessee Tech's lead to one. Canisius closed out the scoring in the second as it capitalized on a pair of two-out Golden Eagle fielding errors to take a 4-3 lead in the contest.

The Griffs' offense continued to work Tennessee Tech starter Kaylan Cole in the third, with juniors Gianna Fazzolari and Falquez both earning one-out walks, setting the stage for Giese, who stepped up to the plate and launched the first pitch she saw over the left-field wall for a three-run shot to put Canisius up, 7-3.

Canisius put up another four-spot on the board in the fourth as graduate transfer Nicole Rivait collected her second hit of the day in the bottom of the frame, a single to left to score junior Christie McGee-Ross.

Giese then drove in her fourth and fifth runs of the contest on a double to left field before scoring on senior Tiara Johnson's single.

Taking an 11-4 lead into the home half of the fifth, sophomore Saige Alfaro singled through the right side of the infield to plate fellow second-year infielder Emily Ilano for the mercy-rule victory.

Giese earned her first win of the season in the circle for the Blue and Gold, striking out seven batters in five innings of work.

Game 2 Recap

Canisius opened the contest by batting around in the top half of the first, plating three runs on a single and five walks. Rivait singled home McGee-Ross before the Griffs drew four straight two-out walks to chase College of Charleston starter Peyton Lemire.

The Cougars cut Canisius' lead to one courtesy of a two-run homer off the bat of Brooke Tranum during the home half of the first.

Rivait connected on a 2-1 pitch to single in McGee-Ross for the second time in as many innings before Giese would drive in Rivait with a sacrifice fly to extend the Griffs' lead to 5-2.

Holding a 5-3 advantage through five innings, McGee-Ross singled home Johnson with a hit to left before Recrosio scored the seventh run of the game for the visitors on a wild pitch.

Sophomore Toria Kover made the start in the circle for Canisius, tossing a career-high four innings. Kover yielded three runs on five hits and three walks while fanning a career-high four batters in the win.

Graduate Alexis Churchill made her first appearance of the campaign in relief, tossing three shutout innings to earn the save.

Game Notes
• The Griffs hit a home run in the first game of the season for the second consecutive year. Fazzolari, Falquez and sophomore Rosie Gomez each left the yard in Canisius' 16-1 mercy-rule victory over SC State on Feb. 18, 2022.
• Giese drove in five runs in the first game, which is the most RBI for a Canisius pitcher since Lauren Castro drove in six on April 22, 2017 at Rider.
• Giese also became the first pitcher since Castro to drive in at least five runs and pitch in the same game. Castro had six RBI and tossed 3.1 innings of relief against Dayton on March 3, 2017.
• With three walks against the Golden Eagles, Falquez recorded the ninth multi-walk game of her career.

Up Next
• Canisius will return to the diamond Saturday to face Boston University and Tennessee Tech at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively on the second day of the Cougar Classic.
